SET OF 6 LATE BLOWN SANDWICH GLASS TEA CUPS

Description: THE REAL THING!! 2" H., clear flint glass, applied handles, hand etched "Roman key pattern and stars," America ca. late 19th century. All in excellent condition. 6 glasses are included in this set. NICE TO FIND A GROUPING OF THESE, IT'S A WONDER THAT THEY ALL SURVIVED TOGETHER! As competition became hard for the Sandwich glass co., it became necessary for them to come up with new products. Glass was more expensive for them to make (than their midwestern rivals ..... the right sand had to be imported and as the avaliable local sand on the cape beaches was not appropriate to make glass with). These cups represent some of their latest efforts. Sandwich tried a line of blown products, now known to us as "LATE BLOWN SANDWICH." The factory no longer pressed the glass as it was known for, but insted, it was hand blown and etched. This effort did not catch on however, and in the late 1880s the Sandwich glass co. had to let its furnaces go out and closed their doors forever.
